SC-Carmel Summer Swim Lessons

SCSC – Carmel is one of our outdoor facilities, located on the south side of 146th Street west of Gray Road (click on the link for a map & directions). We offer swimming lessons in June in our heated outdoor pool. SPLASH Lessons are offered every spring and summer in two-week sessions. Students swim Monday through Thursday for two weeks. Class times are published in January or February. Please download our SPLASH and 8-week Session New Enrollment Info for more details on our policies & procedures.

SC-Carmel is closed for the season. Swimming lesson information will be posted in February for the 2018 SPLASH sessions.

Program & Session Information

Small Group Lessons

Small group lessons can have up to four students per instructor. The small teacher:student ratio allows swimmers to receive individual attention and keeps classes moving at a steady pace. Puffer Fish through Dolphins are limited to 4 students per instructor. Angelfish is limited to 2 students per instructor.

Small Group – $170/child

Private & Semi-Private Lessons

Private & semi-private lessons have one or two students per instructor. In order to enroll as a semi-private class, we must have two students registered. SCSC is not capable of pairing up students in order to qualify a class as semi-private. It is the clients responsibility to provide two students (i.e. sibling, friend, etc.). In the event that a second student does not register, the class will be changed to a private. Private and semi-private classes can only be scheduled through the SCSC office. Please call us for available dates and times.

Semi-Private – $325/child
Private – $450/child

Level Descriptions & Class Schedules

Super Swimmers 2

Requirements: Ages 2 1/2 – 3 1/2 and never been through the SCSC Infant/Toddler classes.

Angelfish is our first level for children ages 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 who have not been through Little Swimmers or have not been enrolled in Little Swimmers for over 2 months. This class focuses on teaching children to enjoy water. Students will focus on learning to put their face in the water, blow bubbles, float on their back, and go under the water all while assisted by one of our instructors. Angelfish classes at SC-Carmel are limited to 2 students per instructor due to the environment and nature of outdoor lessons. Parents should wear their suit on the first day and be prepared to get in the water.

Puffer Fish

Average age: 3 – 5 years

This class is for children who are 3 years old and new to our program or have been promoted from Angelfish. The Puffer Fish class will teach the basics of stroke technique and water safety. Swimmers will learn front and back floats, how to swim underwater 2-3 feet, front and back flutter kicks, front reaches and kicks with their faces in the water, and an introduction to rollover breathing.

Clown Fish

Average age: 3 – 6 years

Children must be at least 3 years old and capable of going under water and swimming 2-3 feet independently. Most children enrolled in this class have completed our Puffer Fish class. The primary goals for swimmers in this class are to master proper technique for front flutter kicks and back flutter kicks, further develop their rollover breathing, and be able to swim 5-7 feet independently. Instructors will take this class to the big pool from time to time for jumps and to help them become accustomed to the different environment.

Crabs 1 & 2

Age: 4+ and fearful or very hesitant

We offer an older beginner class for children who are either fearful or very hesitant about swimming. Whether it is due to a previous negative experience or busy schedules, many children enter our program with an overwhelming fear of water. This class will focus on helping students conquer their fears and become comfortable in water. Once students have overcome their initial fears, they will begin learning basic stroke technique, including front and back floats, kicking with their faces in the water, rollover breathing, and an introduction to side-breathing and backstroke. This class is designed for fearful children over the age of 4 years old. If you have a child over 4 years old who has never had lessons but is NOT fearful, please contact us and we will help determine the correct level.

Average age: 3 – 8 years

This class is considered a transition class for most children. Younger swimmers who are coming from the Clown Fish class will begin transitioning to side-breathing and learn to swim longer distances. Older swimmers who are just entering our program, but have some basic swimming skills, will learn side-breathing. All swimmers will be introduced to backstroke and breaststroke kicks, when their instructor feels they are developmentally ready. Proper stroke technique is a focal point in this class and children will swim shorter distances in order to focus more on doing the strokes correctly.

This class will further develop proper freestyle technique and begin focusing more on backstroke and breaststroke technique. Students will still only swim half the length of the pool, in order to focus on their strokes and breathing. They will also be introduced to elementary backstroke and dolphin kicks. This class is the first step for students who are possibly interested in pursing recreational or competitive team swimming. Swimmers will begin swimming the length of our big pool using a kick board.

This is the first class where students will begin swimming the full length of the pool without a kick board. They will also begin learning rhythmic breathing, which is a more advance form of side-breathing. Swimmers will continue focusing on proper technique of backstroke and breaststroke, while increasing their distances. Butterfly and sidestroke will be introduced in this class, as well as flip turns.
