Attending Swim Lessons Amid Coronavirus Concerns

At Stony Creek Swim Center, we are actively monitoring developments of COVID-19 in the community and would like to assure you that we are taking extra precautions to keep our swim school healthy and clean. The safety and well-being of our staff and customers are our top priority during this time.

We have increased our cleaning periods with hourly disinfection of all surfaces, and are continually sanitizing the toys and books in our play areas. Hand sanitizer has been placed around the facility, as well as signage promoting effective handwashing. We are encouraging staff and students to stay home if they are sick. If you have traveled to an area that has been deemed high-risk or have been in contact with individuals who are suspected of being sick, we ask that you do not attended swim lessons for AT LEAST 2 WEEKS.

Here are recommendations from the CDC on preventing the spread of illness:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

Just Keep Swimming?

As parents, we know how important it is to keep a predictable routine for our children. Many of our swim families have continued to come to lessons during this time. We would like to assure those of you who are attending, that swim lessons might be one of the best activities for our children to still participate in. What we are learning is that drinking water and pool water, when properly treated with chlorine, is considered to be safe, as “adherence to the appropriate guidelines will control risk from waterborne COVID-19 virus“. Our pool water is treated with chlorine, in accordance with the state of Indiana’s Health Code, and also passes through a UV light treatment, which kills off all bacteria and viruses that may pass through. As an extra precautionary step, SCSC will be closing for an additional week for spring break. During that time we will be installing a new chlorination system. This was previously scheduled to be installed later in 2020, but we have bumped up the install date as a preventative measure in response to the current situation. Our current chlorination system fully meets health codes, but it was time for a new system anyway and we decided it would be best to install it now rather than later in the year, as originally planed. A separate email will be sent regarding spring break.

Outside of the pool, we are using the appropriate cleaning agents that are proven to kill off any dangerous viruses, including hospital-grade disinfectant that lasts for 24 hours. We will continue to do what is necessary to maintain a clean and safe environment for our swim community.

Continuing Your Swim Lessons

We understand that each family’s situation is unique, and for some, it is too high of a risk to continue normal activities. For those families dealing with compromised immune systems and other health concerns, we are more than happy to temporarily put your lessons on hold. Please contact us for information on how to pause your lessons.

For all other families, all reported absences will be excused and we will be extending our make-up period. As long as the absence is reported, they can be made up at anytime (30-day make-up expiration is temporarily suspended). We will also be offering free drop-in lessons for currently enrolled students. You will be able to schedule these by calling our office the day you want to drop in. We will also be offering free open swim from 1-2pm on Monday, Wednesday, & Friday for currently enrolled families.

We understand the concern and worry during this unprecedented time. Our number one priority is the health and safety of our swimmers, clients, and staff. We strongly encourage families to remain enrolled in lessons and to speak with us directly regarding safety. It is imperative that our communities continue to support small businesses through this health crisis and we truly appreciate your support of SCSC!

Thank you for understanding and continuing to support small businesses in our community.
